The disputed territories in Iraq is a sensitive and complex national issue, which has not yet been resolved. The Law of Administration for the State of Iraq for the Transitional Period of 2004, repealed, and the Iraqi Constitution of 2005 have placed a high priority on this matter. Several constitutional mechanisms have been established to resolve this issue and to determine the fate of the disputed territories between the federal authorities and the Kurdistan Regional Government. In the event that the national federal authorities fail to perform their constitutional duties, the Constitution allows for international participation in resolving this national issue, in particular through the Secretary-General of the United Nations who may conduct the necessary arbitrations.
