The conservation and development of water resources is one of the most important and sensitive issues in the world, at a time when problems related to water resources, human misuse, and unscientific management of these resources are increasing day by day.
The purpose of this study is to identify the problem of water pollution, analyze the quantity and quality of water pollution in the Balakian River, and compare it with national and international standards. To achieve the research results, it is based on inductive and comparative methods, and both quantitative and qualitative analysis tools, as well as GIS, have been used. Ultimately, the study reached several conclusions:
Soran wastewater residues have affected water quality both chemically and bacteriologically in the study area. Chemically, they have led to an increase in total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, nitrate (NO3-), chloride (Cl-), and water turbidity. Bacteriologically, there has been an increase in chlorine (Cl) and E. coli bacteria. The impact is also linked to the growing population and the lack of sewage treatment facilities in the city, particularly after 2005. The population of the area has grown rapidly, reaching 133,016 people.
