This research sheds light on the legal framework necessary for the creation of free zones in the Kurdistan Region because of the importance of these zones on the process of sustainable economic development. Of course, free zones are a defined geographical area under surveillance, whether these areas are built in sea mines or air mines or land mines, and in these areas many different commercial activities are carried out that benefit the host country. These zones are also places for restoring goods and these goods are foreign in principle in order to re-export them or to do some necessary work with them. This study used analytical and comparative methods to highlight the legal framework for the creation of these zones in the Kurdistan Region. The study concluded that the Kurdistan Region has a favorable environment for the creation of these zones, especially in the triangle between Iraq, Syria and Turkey, but there is no legal framework to regulate these zones. Therefore, this research recommends that when a new law for investment is formulated these legal frameworks should be taken into account.
