The study describes in detail the Iran policy of the Trump administration, including the withdrawal from the nuclear Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreed upon on July 14, 2015, by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the European Union, and Iran. After the Trump administration withdrew from the agreement, it began to impose harsh economic sanctions on Tehran, also known as greater economic pressure, in an effort to contain Iran's hegemony and influence abroad and coerce it into signing a new agreement with new conditions to implement American demands. This study examines whether or not Trump was successful with his containment strategy, as well as the reasons for his departure from the nuclear accord and the negotiating strategies he used with Iran. The study uses the “Theory of Defensive Neorealism” to answer the research questions and comes to the conclusion that Trump's plan to keep Iran in check failed.
