The Climate Change Impact on National Security: Case of Iraq

Abstract

Today, political science focuses on climate change as an important and contemporary topic. The main reason for this, alongside the increasing the impacts of climate change, is the ability of geographical changes to influence the principles of politics, power and the state. National security is one of the issues that is directly affected and threatened by environmental changes in which states cannot be indifferent to it. The most important of these threats are those that affect food security as part of national security. This leads to migration that causes major changes at the domestic level, such as demographic changes and changing the political design of elections and their impact on social security and political stability. In addition, at the international level, is also a threat to the human resources and the national identity of different countries. With regard to Iraq, climate change is a serious threat to the national security of Iraq and it has affected agriculture, economy, food security, social security and political stability of the country - and these impacts are increasing.
