Post-Genocide Community Reconstruction: The Life Experiences and Resilience of Barzani Women as a Case Study

Abstract

This study represents a historical sociological investigation into an important and neglected aspect of our society: the lived experiences and resilience of Barzani women following the 1983 genocide process and their role in post-genocide community reconstruction. The primary objective of this research is to understand the survival strategies employed by Barzani women in confronting oppression and persecution, as well as their distinctive approaches to protecting family and culture. To achieve this aim, the study employs a qualitative methodology using a descriptive-analytical approach based on content analysis of various written sources. This research constitutes an important and novel contribution to understanding the impact of genocide on social transformation and women's roles in overcoming obstacles in post-genocide society.

The findings of this study reveal that due to the genocidal killing of their male relatives, Barzani women were able to assume new roles and transform from traditional motherhood to family leadership and cultural preservation. Furthermore, this research highlights the importance of investigating women's experiences in Kurdish society, particularly in post-genocide contexts, and serves as a valuable resource for future researchers working in historical and sociological studies.
